Barnsley's book is specialised while trying to be popular, and uses mathematics while trying to explain things to the nonspecialist. These procedures are stimulating and exciting (as is the subject matter of the book) but make the book difficult to read and learn from. This is understandable, since the book is based on the notes for a course of lectures given in California in 1987. The problems indicated here would hardly arise with the lecturers close by and ready to explain. The book can be recommended only to those who are thorough and persistent in their study.
